In January 2021 we were delighted to receive a three year funding grant, allowing us to employ an additional Children and Young People’s Practitioner in our therapy team.

The £100,000 funding comes from a new Family Wellbeing Fund set up by Sellafield Ltd and the Cumbrian Community Foundations, which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of some of the most disadvantaged children and families in Allerdale and Copeland.

The new practitioner will be an experienced play therapist who uses a therapeutic modality called Filial Child Parent Relationship (CPRT), to support families affected by rape, exploitation, sexual and domestic abuse.

Parents and carers are taught child-centered play therapy principles, attitudes, and skills during weekly, supervised play sessions with their children. The aim is to encourage them to become catalysts of change within their families. Over time, Safety Net’s intention is to cascade training and experience across the wider therapeutic team, to support more families across the county.

“We’re truly delighted to receive this funding for this specialist role” said Jo Birch, Head of Operations. “CPRT is a really effective approach for working with parents of very young children and supporting long term recovery within families. We know it will make a huge difference to our client’s lives and so we’re really grateful to our funders for their support.”
